The following photos are my photos, which I took in 2012 on my walks on the island of Montreal. You can click on each image to see a larger view.

This first photo is of a black squirrel! We do have some here in Montreal but they are rare, as far as I know! The majority that I see are gray. (just like the one in the photo beneath this one). It seems as though this little guy was posing for my photo!  :)

Gray Squirrel, most common in Montreal

This is a photo of a blue heron. This majestic bird stayed so still that I at first thought it was not a real bird but eventually it did move so I managed to capture this photo. These birds are found in Montreal but they are pretty elusive and as you can see don't really come near the shore. At least not when people are around.

Nothing really special here, I just loved the colours.

Some of you know this, but I will mention this for the benefit of those who may not know. Montreal is a large city situated in the province of Quebec, in the country of Canada. This sign is typical in Quebec...because it is in French. This sign pictured below means: "Open, Quebec corn" I found this in 2012 just north of Montreal. I thought it was relevant to show this, because anyone coming to Montreal will see that our signs in Quebec are in French.

I also want to point out that Canada is a bilingual country, both English and French are present. However, some (not all) politicians here in Quebec want French to be the only language, hence when you come to visit this province this is what you should expect to see.

Last thing I want to mention is that we get tourists here from all over the world including ones who do not speak French, and most Quebecers are bilingual. We are friendly and welcoming to people who visit here, so don't let the French signs scare you.  :)
Also, there are bilingual signs in the most frequented tourist areas, such as downtown Montreal, Old Montreal, and Chinatown!

The following photos were all taken this month on my cellphone. This is a continuation of the series from my last posts, which were all taken at Jean Drapeau Park, on Ile Ste Helene, St. Helen's Island, the location of Expo 67 here in Montreal in 1967. You can click on each image to see a larger view.
Please visit the Expo 67 link for more details about this place.

As for the flowers, I have no idea what they are, so if any of you do, please don't hesitate to mention in your comment.

A horse sculpture.

A moose sculpture (on the left with the antlers), not sure what the other one is.

This is a hand sculpture holding an eagle...and a beautiful waterfall. Just watching and hearing the waterfall is so refreshing and calming!

The dome you see in the background of this photo is called the Biosphere. It is a museum with some beautiful plants and a fascinating exhibition that I am told changes frequently. The emblem that you see in front of the Biosphere is the logo used for Expo 67, "Man and his World", "Terre des Hommes" in French.

I decided to zero in and get a closeup of the Biosphere for you. And there is water in front of it, a man made pond of sorts, at the bottom, it is really a beautiful site! The dome is transparent and I love the fact that you can see the beautiful blue sky and clouds in it!

This last photo...I took this inside the Biosphere! There were so many beautiful and colourful plants! They are all on a wall situated on a walkway in part of the museum. I just had to take this photo, I was so captivated by this!

This video is a Just for Laughs Gag (Juste pour Rire in French) done here in Montreal. Enjoy! :)

This next video is of an African Gray parrot annoying a cat. :)

This last video is The Mental Health Benefits of Nature by Dr. Julie Smith (The Green Planet, BBC) I found this to be a lovely video and thought it would be great to share with you all.

  1. I love everything but that chicken is too funny. Lol! How's your summer going so far, Linda?

  2. Rick will be cycling into Quebec from Michigan (as far as the Eastern provinces) in August/September, leaving from Michigan on August 13, as he heads toward New England. I told him he should brush up on his French! Chances are the more rural he gets, the less likely the English! It's such a beautiful province. I would love to visit Montreal again -- my visit was too brief (less than a day) and I know it has so much to offer. Oh, and before I forget, thank you so much for your visits and comments on my blog, too!

  4. The Dome is amazing! And I love the topiaries!! A black squirrel, this is so cool! I think most people will never see one. The first pretty flowers look a bit like Petunias.

  5. I love hearing the sound of the waterfall, too.

  7. In my area in the US, (and if we could swim a great distance across a lake we could visit Canada) we were encouraged to take Spanish classes. Or Latin. I have a family member applying for a work visa and she noted that French speaking would be an asset. If we only knew what was coming.
When my kids were little we could get Sesame St from Canada on our cable television. The little episodes would be run in English and French. Then we would watch the same episodes on our PBS station and they would run in English and Spanish. I was happy my littles could count to ten and recite the alphabet in all 3 languages. Oh, the good ole days.

  11. "I could have hatched in Hawaii, but nooooo..." That is hilarious! The grey squirrel reminded me of the ones I saw when I was in Boston a few years ago. They were very tame, not afraid of us at all. The Peach Mango Smoothie recipe sounds delicious! Have a great week ahead. Tomorrow is Friday yay!

  12. It's great what you show and explain about Montreal!
The squirrels are so cute to watch and wonderful the green statues.
You have chosen the great funny and good sayings so beautifully again, thank you for the effort you make!
Have a good day! hugs Elke

  14. Thank you, dear Linda. I think you go with my friend fK - she says friendships come and go for a reason - the real ones stay.
I lost some because of the weirdest reasons! But then... they were not "real" from their sides (sadly from mine they were).
    William Hazlett is so right!!!
When I lost my job that was how I went to art - coloring adult-pages as in mandalas and such - to find some calm, no-panic-moments.
Yap. That chicken. Me. Oh, I hope for heat waves like last time in Perth!
And you are so right, dear friend! I found many a happy moment on that "darn" Dortmund-trip!!! Am I thankful!
Oh. Where to get all the frozen fruit?
And yes. Dortmund was a challenge and I grew! (Will share come Sunday and hope those who care to read will laugh their heads off...).
    I am grateful, for sure.
Our squirrels are firey red - yet "mine" is gone.... If you like you can peek in here (thank you for the memory!
    Those sculptures are wonderful!
    That parrot and cat, LOL!!!
I so wish I could have a cat or two. But after I saw my friend´s cat grow old and all went... so sad... too sad.
I had a clever mouse and I´m still sometimes thinking of her. Reckon animals have a life-span too short for me to "accept"... Or? Maybe when I retire? So far I am thankful there is the internet for me to "join" - with that - thank you, dear Linda and have a great day!

  20. We went to Montreal in 2009 and everyone would talk in french (or quebequoi :) ) and everything was almost just french... some places would have english signs too, but not much.
We had to struggle talking french :) fortunately in the hotel and the city underneath many people did speak english!
It was a quirky week there :)
    The squirrels are cute!

  35. How interesting...I didn't realize there was such a thing as a black squirrel. Here in WV where we live, we have gray squirrels and red squirrels.

Loved the quote on gratitude...and I got a chuckle out of the chicken in the snow pondering the fact that she could have hatched in Hawaii. Isn't that just so like us humans?

  36. Peach-Mango Smoothie sounds delicious! Thanks for sharing the recipe.

  37. We moved away back in ‘62, but I can’t remember seeing anything but gray squirrels there. It was surprising to see many black squirrels in Toronto. Here, in Ottawa, there is a mixture of to two although, as noted above, they are both categorized as Grey Squirrels.

  41. 🪶 Bonjour Linda,

  67. I love all your pictures, Linda! One is more precious than the other. We have a lot of black squirrels on our land...in fact, it's probably the most prevalent color. My favorite picture is that first one, with the two kitties sitting side-by-side looking outside. Whoever the illustrator is, of those type pictures, really draws my type of art. Love, Andrea xoxo

  68. I had a good laugh over the chicken that could have been born in Hawaii :) It is good to let people know about the french speaking, we were married over 40 years ago and took a train to Toronto and were very surprised when so many people were speaking French, we were not aware when first going. Yes everyone was very nice.
Wow those sculptures are quite impressive, I don't think I have seen them that big with greenery on them!

  70. Very cool sculptures. Funny that some of the French Canadian want it only to be French Canadian because to me, that shuts off the area making money from those on holiday who don't speck French Canadian. Silly to me. That said, LOOOOOVE the cartoons. Funny about the egg in the snow. Burrrr....

  75. Hello dear friend, this is a delightful post and one I enjoyed reading tremendously :) lovey images with the wise words and loved your own photos. I also appreciated the info on Quebec and the French language. I know a little about this as my husband had several business trips up that way before retirement, and enjoyed getting to know his bilingual speaking colleagues. To this day he likes to learn new French words and phrases, and but he is by no means fluent. He just likes to keep it going. Happy weekend to you, and also wishing you a wonderful July!

  96. Dear Linda,
I haven’t written lately because I’ve been tidying up my blog—it took me a lot of time, but the work is almost done.
I read all of your posts because they always lift my spirits; they’re thoughtful, original, and wise—and there’s always something about cats.

I’m curious where you find all those quotes and lovely little cards. They’re such sweet reminders of how important fleeting moments are in life—sometimes they bring a sense of reflection, other times a smile, or even both at once.

I had no idea black squirrels existed! Ours are red and much smaller than the gray ones—they actually resemble the black one more.
Those green sculptures in the park are truly beautiful—really impressive!

Sending you warm greetings and wishing you a lovely day.

  97. Thank you Linda for all the photos taken by yourself. I am fascinated by the huge human face sculpture so I look it up online and found that the name is mother earth:

"The colossal sculpture, a towering 11 metres high, depicts a caring, compassionate woman, whose eyes are closed as she lets a cascade of water flow from her arm. The sculpture conveys the cycle of life and the generosity of nature."

Very meaningful and majestic sculpture. I am in awe of it. 😲

  108. I loved the John Steinbeck quote and both videos. I can't imagine how I would react if someone was holding a realistic funeral on my front lawn.

  110. The top image of the cat artwork is so beautiful! Linda, this is such a lovely post - I especially enoyed the photos from the site of Expo 67, the sculptures are amazing. So is the biosphere, very interesting!
I'd love to visit Québec one day - I shouldn't have a problem with the language since I learnt French, even though I think that it's spoken a bit different than in France. I love to learn foreign languages and if I travel to a country that neither speaks English, German, French or Spanish, I make an effort to learn at least a few important words in the respective country's language. It opens so many doors.
Thank you for your very kind comment on my last blogpost!
