I just saw the Montreal News on TV this evening and unfortunately, the Montreal buses and metro will be going on strike beginning next week, for two weeks. So next week and the week after.
They want a 25% increase in salary over the next 3 years. They have been offered half this amount. This is their reason for striking.
They said they will offer "essential services" as in 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. So anyone who works or students will be fine. But for seniors, or even mothers with young children who they need to take to daycare, etc., well...you get the inconvenience. Obviously we are not considered "essential."
This is not good news for me, because it takes away my ease and freedom of getting around the city for shopping, even doctor's appointments, etc.
Now I don't have a doctor's appointment, thankfully, but all senior citizens, including myself, especially will be affected by this strike.
Please keep anyone affected by this strike in your prayers and thoughts, it is going to be a difficult two weeks. I truly appreciate your prayers and thoughts. A heartfelt thanks!

ReplyDeleteOh dear me, that is a proper nuisance then with no buses for shoppers etc. Taxi's it would be I guess for many.
ReplyDeleteI remember working in the shoe factory and striking (not my idea) for a measly 3% raise spread over two years or maybe it was three years. I don't even remember if we got that raise, with kids at home I was always broke anyway.
ReplyDeleteIt IS very inconvenient when buses go on strike, I imagine a few taxi services will do well until the strike is over.

ReplyDeleteOh dear, this is terrible! I am so sorry for commuters who need to use the transport service outside the hours that strikers have set. I hope that you will be all right and can get alternative transport if needed. I also hope that this issue could be resolved much sooner. Take care, Linda and have a good weekend!

Oh, that's difficult, of course. I always try to understand both sides in such situations. I don't know the circumstances in Canada, of course. But on the one hand, I understand when employees campaign for good working conditions or fair wages—and on the other hand, I can absolutely understand that passengers get annoyed. Especially when their freedom of movement is so restricted. So I wish you all the best and hope that you can find a way to get around!

ReplyDeleteOh, I am so fed up with strikes. I understand they get not enough money,but really. When we went to Perth: DB on strike. Flight to Adelaide, OANTAS on strike. Frankfurt > Braunschweig DB on strike...

I understand that people struggle with the rising cost of living, when wages never go up in accordance with the rising costs of making ends meet. Striking is something I really dislike, as it affects the whole community. Hopefully, it will be over soon.
ReplyDeleteA strike of two weeks is extraordinary, and I would think matters will be on their way to be resolved sooner. If like public transport anywhere, the workers have to battle for decent wages, while the management side has expanded massively in recent times, with some very highly paid managers.

ReplyDeleteThis is common in France we are having many strikes and demonstrations in the streets at the moment. Last week all was on strike even hospitals and it will be the same next week. Glad we were away on vacation. Hope it will settle quickly for you.
